Hurstville City Council will organise two events to celebrate Reconciliation Week this year. Council will host a Reconciliation Week morning tea on Thursday 27 May 2010 from 10am-11.30am at Council Foyer. The morning tea will welcome two guest speakers working towards the promotion of reconciliation. Other cultural activities are also planned for the day.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

As part of this year’s celebrations, Hurstville City Council is holding a series of events from 2 – 9 July 2009 for families, young people and children. The theme for NAIDOC Week 2010 is “Unsung Heroes - Closing the Gap by Leading Their Way”.

REPORT DETAIL

Local Celebration of NAIDOC Week will commence on Friday 2 July 2010 by holding an Opening Ceremony at Centre Stage, Westfield Hurstville. Ten different activities are being organised during NAIDOC Week this year. There will be something for everyone in the community to participate in during the week. It will also give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people the opportunity to display the richness of their culture and heritage to the rest of the local community.

REPORT DETAIL

The Committee was asked to nominate local people for the National NAIDOC Week Award to recognize their achievements in helping to Close The Gap by Leading Their Way in a variety of fields. The information about the nominees needs to be submitted before the due date to enable the nominations to be lodged on time.

As no names have been received it is suggested that the Committee nominates Marjorie Anderson, Louise Durmush, June Reimer and Annette Webb for the Award in recognition of their efforts.

The Director of NAIDOC Week School Initiatives has submitted a proposal to Council for financial support for NAIDOC Week School Initiatives.

Council has always been supportive of this initiative and provided $450 in most years.This is used towards the design, printing and distribution to schools across council's local government area. This year they are asking for continuos support.

It was suggested at the last meeting of the Committee that Council be requested to consider flying the Aboriginal Flag on a permanent basis on the Civic Centre building rather than just during celebrations.
