MAYORAL MINUTE

16th October, 2002

TERRORIST ATTACK IN BALI

The terrorist attack in Bali on October 12th has left us all shocked and dismayed at the level of carnage perpetrated against innocent people going about their daily lives. Like September 11th, we are once more left wondering at the logic of such a barbaric act and whether the perpetrators have any moral qualms at all.

Last year, when commenting on the World Trade Centre attack, my hope was that we may never witness such events ever again. But sadly, I have been proved wrong. This time it was holidaymakers, predominantly from Australia, as well as a range of other nations who were the target of this cowardly attack. It has shown to us that terrorism is not something remote that only happens on the other side of the world, but can strike directly at our lives. As the toll continues to climb many Australian families are coming to terms with their sad loss.

On behalf of the Hurstville City Council we would like to extend our deepest sympathy and support to the families and friends of all those tragically killed in this callous attack.

I would now ask everyone to stand for a minute's silence to honour these people.

Clr V Badalati
MAYOR

HURSTVILLE CITY COUNCIL
CIVIC CENTRE, MACMAHON STREET, HURSTVILLE.
