Recommendation

The Committee note the verbal report provided by the Manager of Environment, Health and Regulatory Services.

 

Executive Summary

1.      Council Manager of Environment, Health and Regulatory Services will deliver a verbal report to the committee in response to the Committee’s requested report on the 18 June 2019.

Background

2.      At the Economic Development Advisory Committee Meeting held on Tuesday 18 June 2019 the Committee requested a report on the statutory requirements for Building and Business Identification Signs.

Recommendation

The Economic Development Advisory Committee receive and note the following report on the City Strategy and Innovation Directorate ‘Leading For Change’ event series.

 

Executive Summary

1.      During February and March 2020 the City Strategy and Innovation unit had the opportunity to host a suit of events, The Leading for Change Series, relating to Council’s strategic vision. The target audience for the series was Council staff focused on the leadership team, neighbouring Councils, key external stakeholders and Influencers in city making.

2.      The events will promote Georges River Council’s strategic ambitions and further position us as progressive and innovative Council that is influential in the future of Greater Sydney.

3.      A summary of these events are contained in this report.

 

Background

4.      Tel Aviv Dr Hila Oren visit, 4 -6 February 2020.

As part of the Commonwealth Smart Cities and Suburbs Program, Georges River Council invited special guest Dr. Hila Oren from Tel-Aviv Global to share her experience and knowledge on city making, particularly creating a brand and identity for cities.

The itinerary for the visit included;

·    A visit to Georges River College Peakhurst Campus to discuss with students what the area means to them and what they are proud of. They valued the Peakhurst foodies and farmers market and Carss Park.

·    Georges River Council staff and Executive had the opportunity to participate in workshops and knowledge sharing.

·    A networking event with neighbouring Councils and Councillors.

·    Met with the Executive team and Mayor Kevin Greene.

·    Facilitated a session for Directors and Managers around branding and innovation.

·    A smart city knowledge shoring event where staff of other councils explored the LGA including the new ChillOut Hubs.   

 

5.      Southern Sydney Councils Innovation and Entrepreneurship Roundtable, 13 February 2020.

Georges River Council in partnership with Regional Development Australia (RDA) Sydney hosted a roundtable for Southern Sydney Councils to share knowledge and ideas that support innovation and entrepreneurship.

In the context of the growth of entrepreneurship and changes in the way that people work, Council support for innovation and local entrepreneurial activities is an opportunity to grow the Southern Sydney economy and create great jobs for our community.

The day was an opportunity for Council’s to share their journey and experiences in this space as well as learn from experts in the space. A line up of guest speakers included experts from ANSTO, Sydney School of Entrepreneurship, UTS and a local entrepreneur.  

6.      Leading for Change 2020, 20 March 2020.

Since the 2016 merger Council has taken significant strategic steps towards the future planning and positioning of our city. In light of this significant progress, it is now time to promote Georges River Council, grow our strategic partnerships and position the city for jobs growth and investment as well as celebrate the significant wins we have had over the past 12 months.

An event to ‘Launch the City’ provides an opportunity to cement our strategic significance in Greater Sydney. The event will focus on the critical role Georges River plays in achieving the state governments 30 minute city aspirations, provision of high quality jobs and the importance of supporting our strategic centres Kogarah and Hurstville.  

Foundational strategies including the Draft Local Strategic Planning Statement 2040, Georges River 2050 – Leading for Change, Cultural Strategy, Kogarah Collaboration Area Place Strategy, Kogarah Investment Attraction Strategy and the Hurstville Place Strategy – Hurstville Heart of the City are all evidence of a council that is committed to providing a bright future for its community and meeting our aspirations to attract investment, business, trade, a skilled workforce and visitors. This event will allow Council to formally promote our aspirations to a broader audience.
