Executive Summary
1. On 3 April 2017 Council endorsed the Draft Community Engagement Policy, Draft Community Engagement Strategy and Draft Community Strategic Plan Engagement Strategy to be placed on public exhibition for 6 weeks.
2. Council will hold community consultation sessions on Wednesday 19 April and Saturday 13 May to gain feedback and respond to any questions or concerns from interested community members.
3. Community consultation for Council’s Community Strategic Planning is presently underway. A survey is available online until 30 April 2017 at: www.georgesriver.nsw.gov.au/Council/Have-Your-Say. Committee members are encouraged to fill out the survey and promote through their networks.
4. Council’s Senior Corporate Planner will present at the next CDSAC meeting in June to provide further information and facilitate input form Committee members into the development of the Community Strategic Plan.

Executive Summary
1. On 3 April 2017 Council endorsed the Draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017 – 2021 to be placed on public exhibition for a period of not less than 28 days.
2. Committee members are encouraged to review the draft plan, provide recommendations and promote the draft plan through their networks to facilitate wider community consultation.
3. A second report will be presented to the June 2017 Council meeting seeking endorsement of the Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017 – 2021, incorporating the community’s feedback.
Background
4. Georges River Council’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) will set out the strategies and actions that Council is committed to deliver over the next four years to enable people with disability to have greater access to Council’s information, services and facilities.
5. In order for Council to successfully develop a DIAP, all people with a disability need to have the opportunity to be consulted and add input into the plan. To facilitate this, Council has undertaken community consultation between October 2016 and February 2017.
6. Under
the Disability Inclusion Act 2014, all New South Wales Government services must
develop a Disability Inclusion Action Plan by 30 June 2017.

(a) That three (3) key priority areas are identified for the Community Development and Services Advisory Committee to focus on. |
Executive Summary
1. At the Community Development and Services Advisory Committee meeting held on 13 February 2017 it was agreed that three key priority areas were to be identified for the Committee to work on.
2. Committee members were invited to send suggestions for the priorities to the Manager Community and Cultural Development. The following priorities have been proposed for consideration by the committee:
· Community safety (including domestic violence and homelessness);
· Strengthening multicultural connections;
· Positive Mental Health;
· Inclusivity and reducing social isolation;
· Affordable housing;
· Men’s health.
3. The key priority areas will assist Council, in conjunction with the Committee, in determining future projects, grant priorities and partnerships.
4. The Committee may also investigate ways of measuring impact and evidencing outcomes of work carried out by Council in addressing the three key priority areas chosen.

Executive Summary
1. This report provides a summary of recent major community development initiatives by Council’s Community Development Team.
ANZAC Lemnos Commemorative Statue and Plaque
2. The ANZAC and Lemnos Commemorative Statue and Plaque in Kogarah Town Square is now in place in Kogarah Town Square following the unveiling event on Saturday 4 March, 2017.
3. The monument commemorates the relationship between Lemnos and Australia forged during the Gallipoli Campaign, and recognises the fundamental role of nurses in theatres of war.
4. The unveiling was attended by over 200 people and was a successful event bringing together the many community stakeholders in this project, including the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps, the Consul General of Greece in Sydney, the Lemnian Association of NSW, the RSL and the local Greek community.
International Women’s Day
5. On 9 March 2017, Council organised a morning tea to celebrate International Women's Day with a focus on women’s empowerment, leadership and financial independency.
6. The event attracted more than 100 people who came to listen to inspiring local migrant business women who shared their stories and aspirations and how they managed to overcome challenges to achieve their vision. The program also showcased a mix of fashion, traditional dress and performances from the diverse cultures including Australia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America.
Harmony Day Celebration
7. On 22 March 2017, Council’s Harmony Day celebration was held at the Hurstville Entertainment Centre and over 300 people joined in the celebrations. The celebration was an important opportunity to reflect upon and celebrate Council’s cultural diversity.
8. The program featured live stage performances representing the waves of migration and the contribution these groups have made to the community. In addition, the program featured short film screenings followed by an interactive workshop on social cohesion.
We Are Active Seniors Positive Ageing Festival
9. Over 1,300 people attended events run between Friday 3 March and Thursday 30 March 2017, for the Positive Ageing Festival. The Festival program included events run by Council and in partnership with a number of community organisations and seniors groups. From formal and anecdotal event evaluations, feedback from the community has been positive.
National Youth Week 2017
10. Georges River Live and Acoustic: This was a free live music event held on 30 March 2017, and delivered in partnership with 3 Bridges Youth Zone. Georges River Live and Acoustic showcased local performers in an intimate and supportive environment. Youth Workers were present to build relationships and increase engagement of new clients through the drop in space. Over 70 young people attended this event.
11. Beats Rhymes and Strokes: This was a free Hip Hop event held on 31 March 2017, featuring notable MC’s, mural artists and local service providers. The event had a mental health theme and saw the creation of a live art mural. Relevant local youth services including Headspace Hurstville, Oasis Youth and 3 Bridges attended the event to spotlight their service to this traditionally hard to access demographic.
12. Short and Stuff: An Exploration of the 2016 Short Stuff Youth Film Festival: This event is a gallery exhibition encompassing a rolling screening of the films from the 2016 Short Stuff Youth Film Festival as well as behind the scenes photos and additional content that underpin the festival. An exploration of some of the key themes presented in the films that link to youth health and wellbeing will be showcased in creative and meaningful ways. This exhibition opened on 1 April and will be open throughout April at the Hurstville Museum and Gallery.

Executive Summary
1. This report provides a summary of upcoming community development initiatives by Council’s Community Development Team.
National Youth Week 2017
2. Race Around Georges River: On 12 April, Race Around Georges River will set challenges for teams of young people through a number of key local sites and services. Sites include Hurstville Aquatic Centre, Headspace Hurstville, 3 Bridges Youth Zone, NOVA Employment, Shopfront Arts Co Op and Kogarah Library. Each challenge will see participants develop a new skill or explore a major issue for young people such as mental health, sexual health or peer relationships, whilst attempting to break down stigmas attached to accessing health and youth services.
3. ScribbleInk Youth Literature Awards: Youth Week will again provide a launching pad for Council’s major literary awards for young people. ScribbleInk has grown in leaps and bounds since its inception and has seen local high school aged writers enter into professional writing off the back of their participation and seen a number of entrants have their works go to print through reputable sources. Launched on Thursday 6 April at Hurstville Library, the awards and associated events will run until June 2017.
Youth Consultation Survey 2017
4. Youth Week 2017 will provide a platform for Council’s major youth consultative process, with the findings informing Council’s key strategic planning documents. An online survey of approximately 15 questions has been developed, exploring how young people connect with Georges River and what their patterns of access for key services and places of interest look like. The survey is open on Council’s website and will close on 30 June 2017.
Amulet at the National Folk Festival in Canberra
5. The popular production Amulet by the Fiestaville Multicultural Choir will return to the Civic Theatre, Hurstville on Friday 7 April. The production is then travelling to Canberra to be part of the National Folk Festival over Easter. The production features the stories, music, songs and performance of twenty local women from the Georges River Council local government area. Fiestaville Multicultural Choir’s touring production of Amulet is supported by Georges River Council’s Community Grants Program.
GRaB Arts Expo and Night Art Market
6. Georges River Council will be holding the first newly branded GRaB Arts event at Rockdale Town Hall in partnership with Bayside Council during the Bayside Arts Festival on Friday 28 April 2017 from 4pm to 8pm. GRaB stands for Georges River and Bayside Councils and replaces the existing St George Arts and Culture Network. Registrations for the Arts Expo and Night Market are now open and expressions of interest have been received from local artists and performers including disability groups.
Sydney Writers’ Festival at Georges River Council
7. In May, Council will host two Sydney Writers’ Festival author events at Council Libraries. These well-attended events ensure Georges River Council community members can participate in a significant literary festival at locations close to home. Details of authors involved are under embargo at time of printing and will be disclosed at the committee meeting; the Festival is launched on Thursday 6 April.
National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day 2017
8. National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day on
Wednesday 3 May remembers those who have died as a result of domestic and
family violence. The St George Domestic Violence
Committee seeks to remember local families affected by this type of violence.
A number of Domestic Violence Committee member organisations will lay
roses at the front of NSW State Parliament House in Macquarie Street during the
day and propose to bring the roses back for a local ceremony in the evening at
Hogben Park, Kogarah. The event will include a candlelight vigil walk from
Kogarah Town Square to Hogben Park via Railway Parade. A short gathering
will follow at Hogben Park followed by a minute’s silence.
Council will support the event as a member of the St George Domestic Violence
Committee by designing promotional material, and providing event logistics
support with some financial contribution to the hiring of equipment to
facilitate the event in Hogben Park.
Council Open Day
9. The Indonesian Community Open Day will be held at Georges River Council, Hurstville Service Centre on Wednesday 10 May from 10am to 12pm. The Open Day is an opportunity for people to learn about Council’s services, resources and activities. Council’s regular open days for multicultural groups form part of Council’s commitment to fostering strong community ties and addressing their social, cultural and recreational needs of our diverse community.
