Mayoral Minute

Item:          MM029-19          Victims of the White Island Volcano Eruption

Mayor:               The Mayor, Councillor Greene

On Monday 9 December 2019, the White Island volcano in New Zealand erupted, impacting approximately 40 passengers of the Royal Caribbean cruise ship - Ovation of the Seas, who were touring the island at the time.

It has been reported that 20 people remain in intensive care with severe burns, 16 people have been confirmed dead and 2 bodies remain missing.

Council’s deepest sympathies go out to the families and loved ones that have been affected by this tragic disaster.

Led by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand paused for a minute's silence at 2.11pm today.  I now invite the community of Georges River to join our cousins across the ditch in observing a minute’s silence as a mark of respect for the victims of the White Island volcano eruption.

MOTION:

That Council observe a minute’s silence as a mark of respect for the victims of the White Island volcano eruption.

Item:          MM030-19          Congratulations to Staff for the Magic of Christmas Event

Mayor:               The Mayor, Councillor Greene

On Sunday 1 December 2019 Council held its Magic of Christmas event at Carss Bush Park with 8,000 people attending. Kirsten Walsh was the MC introducing the entertainment that included Sesame Street, PAW Patrol, Colin Buchanan, the Gospel Choir, The Steeples and local community dance and vocal schools.

Other highlights included free Santa photos, food and market stalls, a visit from Georgie the Dragon and a fireworks finale.

The local SES volunteers assisted during the event with parking and road closures. I would like to thank these volunteers for taking the time to make this event a success.

The success of the event was due to the exceptional contribution by the local volunteers, entertainers, stall holders, local community groups and an outstanding effort by Council staff to organise such a wonderful event.

I would like to thank staff for their commitment to ensuring the successful outcome of the Magic of Christmas event.

MOTION:

That Council staff be congratulated for the successful delivery of the Magic of Christmas event for the Georges River community.

Item:          MM031-19          Proposal to Rename Kogarah Library in Honour of Clive James

Mayor:               The Mayor, Councillor Greene

Background

On 24 November the iconic Australian writer, broadcaster and critic Clive James died from Leukaemia aged 80.

Clive James had a strong connection with the suburb of Kogarah and wrote fondly of his upbringing in his first autobiography “Unreliable Memoirs” (1979). Into his adult life he famously referred to himself as the “Kid from Kogarah”.

He was born on 7 October 1939, growing up at 6 Margaret Street Kogarah. He attended the Kogarah Infants and Primary School, swam at Scarborough Park, raced billy carts down Irene Street and enjoyed the treats of Parry’s Milk Bar, a spot he drolly described as the centre of local night life.

Perhaps most significantly Clive was a regular user of the public library, which was then housed in the Kogarah School of Arts, and through this he developed a lifelong love of literature. Clive went on to achieve fame in Australia and internationally in literature and the arts. He produced four novels, five books of memoirs, numerous poems, essays, articles and song lyrics. He also wrote and hosted a number of successful television programs including the iconic “Clive James on Television” which ran through the 1980s and 90s. Clive also created online content, interviewing many famous personalities on his internet show called “Talking in the Library”.

Now is a fitting moment to pay tribute to this much loved son of Kogarah and to honour his lifelong contributions. I suggest that there is no better tribute than to rename our Kogarah Library building “The Clive James Library”. This library has long been recognised as a literary and cultural hub of the community and it is a wonderful place to represent the lasting legacy of Clive James.

MOTION:

(a)     That Council endorse the proposal to rename the Kogarah Library and Service Centre to pay tribute to the recent passing of Clive James, recognising his lifetime contribution to literature and culture as well as his strong connection to the suburb of Kogarah.

(b)     That Council seek and consider feedback from the Georges River community and the surviving family of Clive James regarding the proposed new building name “The Clive James Library”.

Item:          MM032-19          Congratulations to the St George Art Society on its 75th Anniversary Event

Mayor:               The Mayor, Councillor Greene

In 1944, near the end of World War Two the St George Art Society was established and for 75 years has continuously supported local art creation and appreciation.

Today, the Society meets weekly at the Kogarah School of Arts and delivers regular art classes, art demonstrations and the Annual Art Exhibition which highlights local creative talent.

The 75th Annual Art Exhibition opened in October at the Kogarah School of Arts and attracted visitors from the local community and the greater Sydney region. The annual competition was, this year, judged by Sydney Archibald Prize winning artist, Wendy Sharpe.

Under the leadership of Jean Harrow, President of the St George Art Society and 2017 Volunteer of the Year, the Society is run entirely by passionate volunteers who have dedicated themselves to promoting and supporting local artists and artistic endeavours.

MOTION:

That Council congratulate the St George Art Society on the success of the Annual Art Exhibition and for their 75 years of continuous service to the Georges River community.
