Recommendation:

That Council receive and note the Australia Day Festival event update report.

 

 

Executive Summary

1.      On Saturday 26 January 2019, Council will host the Australia Day Festival at Carss Bush Park from 10am to 9pm. The event celebrates the diversity of the people who call Georges River their home and acknowledges the traditional owners of the land. The event consists of official proceedings, community entertainment, professional bands, food stalls, craft markets and workshops, amusement rides and fireworks.

Background

2.      Australia Day Festival at Carss Bush Park is a family focused event that attracts approximately 15,000 residents and visitors. The official proceedings consists of a welcome to country and smoking ceremony, Australian National Anthem and flag raising ceremony, Mayoral address, announcement of the Australia Day Awards recipients and Australia Day Ambassador, and an Australian citizenship ceremony.

3.      Special guests attending the Australia Day Festival include the Hon David Coleman MP, Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, Steve Drakoulis, Citizen of the Year, Stephanie Sekulovska, Young Citizen of the Year, Janice Steinfurth, Volunteer of the Year and Alexandra Moore, Australia Day Ambassador, Olympian and double gold medallist for gymnastics and diving.

4.      The entertainment program will feature headline act Justice Crew with support by Farnham & Friends. Other professional acts include Low Down Riders, Ally Palmer and the Peter Rabbit show for children. Community performers include Greek and Ecuadorian dancers, participants from local dance schools and award-winning choral singers, Endeavour Harmony Chorus.

5.      The festival will also include food stalls, craft markets, wind sculpture workshops with artist in residence Kassandra Bossell, amusement rides, face painting, Carss Bush Park museum tours, 7D Cinema experience and fireworks. 

6.      A NSW Government Multicultural grant for Celebrating Diversity has provided the opportunity for community members to participate in a digital artwork titled “From far and wide, this is our home”. This project will map visitor’s journeys from across the globe to Georges River.

7.      Parking and traffic management for this event will be monitored by State Emergency Service Kogarah Branch with support by St George Local Area Command. First aid support will be provided by St John Ambulance.

8.      The Australia Day Festival is sponsored by: Event Supporter - Club Rivers, Supporter - Club Central and Media Partners - St George and Sutherland Shire Leader and Vision China Times.

Community Engagement

11.    Community engagement will be conducted onsite at the Australia Day Festival including:

1)      The ongoing Events Survey with consultant, Ethos Urban for the Event Service Delivery Review.

2)      A mini survey that will assist with the delivery of the digital artwork for “From far and wide, this is our home”.

That Council receive and note the Lunar New Year Festival event update report.

 

 

Executive Summary

1.   Georges River Council will welcome in the Year of the Pig at the Lunar New Year Festival on Saturday 2 February 2019 from 10.00am to 5.00pm. The Festival will be held along Forest Road in Hurstville’s central business district. The celebrations begin with a spectacular parade, traditional dragon and lion dance, official proceedings, headline act Wah Dee, cultural performances, food stalls, craft markets, activations, workshops and amusement rides. The event can attract up to 50,000 visitors.

Background

2.      The Lunar New Year festival will begin with a parade of floats along Forest Road, Hurstville leading to the official Lunar New Year ceremony near the bus interchange on Woodville Street, Hurstville. The parade will include twelve colourful giant zodiac animal puppets, dancers, Council’s parade floats and the Yau Kung Mun dragon, lion dancers and drummers.

3.      The official proceedings begin with the traditional lion dance, dotting of the lions eyes and photographs with special guests and sponsors, followed by official speeches from the Mayor, the Major Events Advisory Committee Chair, Major Sponsors and other special guests. Certificates of appreciation will be presented to the festival sponsors and the Major Events Advisory Committee members.

4.      The entertainment program will feature headline act singer Wah Dee, the incredible Yau Kung Mun lion and dragon dancers and Kung Fu Panda for the children. A vast number of cultural performers will also take to the main stage including traditional and operatic singers, martial arts performers, drummers, long sleeve dancers, folk dancers, traditional fan dancers, various musicians and poets.

5.      Other event activities include a cooking demonstration, street art project involving a local artist, community piano, an animal farm, 7D cinema, arts and crafts stalls, face painting and stilt walkers. The layout for the event will incorporate breakout areas including the new Hurstville Plaza, the space in front of Hurstville Station, Palm Court and the Memorial Square.

6.      Parking and traffic management for this event will be monitored by State Emergency Service Hurstville Branch with support from St George Local Area Command. First aid support will be provided by St John Ambulance.
