Item:          MM04: The Inaugural Georges River Council Christmas Lights Competition

Mayor:               The Mayor, Councillor Greene

Background

The inaugural Georges River Council (GRC) Christmas Lights Competition was held to recognise and celebrate the many residents and businesses throughout the Georges River area that brighten up our streets with amazing Christmas light displays that create a warm festive spirit in our community. This is a fantastic way to get into the Christmas spirit and to help create a fun and festive atmosphere for everyone in the Georges River area.

The judging of the entrants participating in the competition occurred on Monday evening 11 December and Tuesday evening 12 December 2017. Overall, 18 entries were received by Council, which is a great effort for the inaugural event. The judging panel consisted of Councillors, Council’s Director Community and Culture, Youth Advisory Committee members Maria An and Soaliha Iqbal and GRC’s 2017 Citizen of the Year, Ms Natalie Esdaile-Watts.

Prizes were on offer for the best residential Christmas Light display in each of Georges Rivers’ five wards. There was also a prize for best Christmas Light display by a business. An overall residential Christmas Light display winner was also chosen from the entrants. Unfortunately, the Mortdale Ward was not represented with any residential entries. However, this did not deter other Wards, who provided ample sparkling lights that attracted many residents for an inspection of their spectacular displays.

The winners of each category are as follows:

Best Residential Christmas Lights Display in Blakehurst Ward

·    Winner: Mrs Lidija Vasilevski, 16 Currawang Street, Carss Park

Best Residential Christmas Lights Display in Hurstville Ward

·    Winner: Mr John Kovacevic, 78 Hodge Street, Hurstville

Best Residential Christmas Lights Display in Kogarah Bay Ward

·    Winner: Mr Salvatore Sellitto, 3 Souter Street, Kogarah Bay

Best Residential Christmas Lights Display in Peakhurst Ward

·    Winner: Mrs Vicky Digiglio, 46 Rainbow Parade, Peakhurst Heights

Best Overall Residential Christmas Lights Display

·    Winner: Mr Salvatore Sellitto, 3 Souter Street, Kogarah Bay

Best Business Christmas Lights Display

·    Winner: Mrs Diana Stojanovska, Poveli Deli Café, 15 Frederick Street, Oatley

Winners will be notified and will attend a Christmas Lights Competition presentation to be held tomorrow evening (Tuesday 19 December) in the Dragon Room at Georges River Council’s Administration Centre commencing at 6.30pm.
